Bahrain 'willing to hold constructive meetings' with new UN rights chief

MANAMA: Bahrain is willing to hold constructive meetings with the UN’s newly appointed High Commissioner for Human Rights to turn a new page towards developing healthy relations with the international community, Assistant Foreign Minister Abdulla Al Doseri said. He stressed the kingdom’s keenness to co-operate with international organisations and honour its obligations towards the UN, the Human Rights Council and High Commission for Human Rights as part of efforts to further promote human rights.

He said it is time to come to terms with the past which caused harm to the reputation and work of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, congratulating former Chilean president Michelle Bachelet on her appointment as the new UN human rights chief.

In a statement to our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej, Mr Al Doseri expressed his aspiration for a successful term of office and constructive and transparent co-operation with all countries to achieve progress that couldn’t be attained during the past tenure. He hoped that the tenure of the new High Commissioner will be distinguished by objectivity, fairness and transparency in dealing with human rights issues.
